Special education

Written in Quilt. Filed where you already file it.

Your special education system stores the document and sends the state its data. It was never built to help anyone write a defensible IEP.

Why this is hard

Forty students. About ninety minutes per IEP.

In that time they gather results from three systems, write present levels, draft goals, set service minutes and check transition requirements. While teaching.

What your current system does well

Stores it and files it.

  • Holds the forms, pre-filled from the student record
  • Catches field-level errors before you affirm
  • Sends what the state requires, on the state’s schedule
  • Carries a student’s history when they transfer

That’s a system of record doing its job, and it should keep doing it.

What it was never built to do

Help anyone write the thing.

  • Read your assessment data and draft present levels from it
  • Tell you a goal has no baseline to measure from
  • Notice that “as needed” isn’t a lawful service description
  • Know that this student turns sixteen in March
  • Assemble the packet so the meeting starts on the discussion

A field-error check isn’t a compliance check. It confirms the box was filled, not that what’s in the box will survive a review.

Working demo

Assemble a draft packet, right now.

This runs in your browser on a fictional student. Press the button and read the draft, including the three places Quilt refuses to write.

Annual review · due Thursday

M. Ortega · Grade 10 · Valle Verde High

Signed assessment plan received February 14. Ed Code §56344 requires the meeting within 60 days. Thursday is day 51. The prior IEP, two assessments and a year of progress data are already in reach.

Fictional student. Nothing is stored, sent or filed.

Illustrative. M. Ortega is fictional and the data is sample data. The structure, the citations and the three refusals are exactly what Quilt produces.

The check

Every draft, against the elements that actually get cited.

Not a spell check and not a field check. Quilt reads the draft the way a compliance reviewer reads it, and names the authority for each finding.

Citations are to California Education Code. Quilt surfaces findings and the authority behind them. It doesn’t provide legal advice, and your counsel and SELPA remain the authority on local procedure.

The line

Quilt does the assembly. The team does the deciding.

Everything above is either a fact already in your record, or a gap named with the requirement behind it. Nothing in between gets invented.

Eligibility, placement, services, goal content and postsecondary goals are determinations of the IEP team. Quilt will hand back a blank with a reason attached rather than fill it, every time.

📜

Your system of record keeps its job

Quilt reads. It doesn’t write to your special education system, and it doesn’t submit to the state. The signed IEP lives and files exactly where it does today.

✍️

Nothing goes out unread

Drafts are drafts. A person reviews and signs before anything reaches a family or a file.

Bring a real draft to the walkthrough.

Thirty minutes, and bring an IEP your team is working on, redacted or a training record, and we’ll run it in front of you.
